Caring for your face isn’t rocket science. There are tried and tested procedures that are known to be the best way that you can care for your face, no matter what type of skin tone you have. The three-step process should be done twice a day, to ensure maximum cleansing of the skin. It is also recommended that the process be followed prior to putting on makeup. Think of your face as a canvas, and you are painting on it. Isn’t it always best to work with a clean, smooth canvas?

1. The first step is washing your face. Choose a cleanser or facial wash that complements your skin type and doesn’t cause you any breakouts. There are so many to choose from in the market, but once you’ve found one that works well, it’s best to stick with it. When you are choosing a cleanser, remember to stay away from bar soaps because they excessively dry out your skin. There are many washes and foams that work just fine.

Likewise, washing your face too often will dry it out as well. The best thing to do is to wash in the morning, and at night before you go to sleep. Warm water is recommended because it opens pores and allows the cleanser to remove dirt and oil clogging your pores.

2. The second step, toning, is essential in removing deep-seated and stubborn traces of makeup. Toning goes hand in hand with cleansing because together they leave the skin ultra clean. It also restores the pH balance of the skin. If you have acne-prone skin, a toner is good in killing bacteria that causes breakouts. The variety of toners in the market are sure to have one that suit your skin’s needs. Use the toner also on your neck, but avoid the eye area.

3. Many people swear that a good moisturizer, regularly used, is good for making you look younger and removing wrinkles. They are essential in hydrating the skin and restoring its elasticity, as well as replacing essential moisture lost with cleansing and toning. If you live in a place with especially humid temperature, your skin will dry out more often and you will need to use moisturizers on a more frequent basis.

Following the basic three-step process, you should also follow other practices to protect your skin from the harsh elements by wearing sun block everyday. Choose a formula that is gentle enough for use on the face, because protecting it from the sun’s rays can help you fight premature skin aging. Don’t be mistaken and skip sun block on cloudy days, because rays can still come through the clouds.

Weekly exfoliating is also essential. Exfoliating with scrubs or masks removes dead skin cells and keeps your skin looking and feeling fresh and clean. Doing this more than once a week can dry out your skin because it will remove the skin’s natural oils that are needed to keep it healthy.
